A car carrier trailer is a tandem or tri-axle trailer built specifically to move a vehicle from one place to another safely and legally. The deck is dimensioned to fit a car, ute or 4WD, and every build comes with slide-in loading ramps, dedicated tie-down rails, and a chassis sized for the load.
Buyers usually choose between a beavertail car trailer (sloped rear, easier for low cars) or a semi flat car trailer (level deck, better for taller vehicles).
It depends on your requirments, the GVM of the trailers, and use case. The general rule of thumb is simple.
If the car you’ll carry most often is low (sports cars, lowered street cars, race cars, classic Euros), go beavertail. The sloped rear softens the loading angle so the front splitter, sump or exhaust doesn’t kiss the ramps.
If you’re mostly carrying SUVs, 4WDs, dual-cab utes or vans, go semi flat. The level deck loads faster, parks tighter, and gives you a usable flat surface if you ever want to carry general loads. Both styles ship with slide-in ramps as standard.

A loaded dual-cab ute typically weighs between 2,200 and 2,600 kg, so you’ll want a 2800 kg GVM trailer at minimum, and a 3200 kg GVM if it’s a heavily-accessorised tourer. A standard sedan or hatch sits comfortably on a 1990 kg GVM trailer. A V8 4WD with a tray full of gear, or a project car you want to leave loaded, is best on a 3500 kg tri-axle. GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) is the maximum legal loaded weight of the trailer, including the trailer itself plus the car on it. It’s stamped on the build plate and you can’t legally exceed it.
Pick the GVM that comfortably covers your loaded car with headroom to spare. Going one size up is cheap insurance, and it matters more than saving a few hundred dollars on the build.
